The Home stay Experience

Cuisine

Integral to the home stay experience is dining at our table, as part of the extended family, where each meal is an occasion to sit down and enjoy a few hours together. At Property, meals are enjoyed in a common dining area. We serve a mixture of continental fare, regional Indian favorites, traditional Kerala cuisine and “Grandmother’s” secret formulas. Along with some home grown vegetables and fruits, you can enjoy bread fresh from our ovens and home-made jams, preserves and relishes. Finish your meal with a steaming cup of hand-picked Arabica/Robusta coffee beans from the estate, roasted and ground to perfection. Garden fresh tea with a dash of milk or high grown teas with a twist of lemon are also great ways to end a sumptuous meal.  

Plantation

The plantation originated in the late 1800’s and has changed hands over the years and in 1994, was bought by the current owners.. It is still very much a working plantation, Coffee being the main crop, interplanted with pepper, cardamom and areca nut. The main cropping season for Coffee and Areca nut is between mid January – mid March, during which time, the plantation buzzes with activity. Conducted plantation visits can be enjoyed between December and March. 

Standard Rooms

The six Standard rooms are housed in the annexe – built by the then owners to accommodate friends and family. The building has been extensively renovated, retaining the ambience of a colonial planter’s bungalow. The rooms open out onto a large shared verandah ( 900 sq.ft) overlooking the lush tropical gardens.

The rooms are well appointed, inviting and meet the high expectations of the discerning traveler. The bathrooms are large, airy and have all the modern amenities. Other features include a TV, Satellite receiver, electronic safe and a Tea/Coffee maker. 

Deluxe Room

Located in the west wing of the main bungalow, the Deluxe room adjoins the patio and looks down over the swimming pool from a private verandah.

The room is large ( 600 sq.ft ), airy and has wooden floors, ceiling and paneling. For the convenience of guests, there are two individual bathrooms and dressing room ensuite.

Tree House

Nestled under the beauty of a GulMohr Tree, our luxury Tree House rests on three trees. At a height of 35 feet from the ground level and overlooking a valley facing north, the entire structure measures 517 sq.feet, comprising of a bedroom, a bathroom with a six point shower and a north facing verandah offering a panoramic view of the estate.

Modern amenities include a TV, DVD, Satellite receiver, mini fridge, electronic safe and a Tea/Coffee maker. Adequate light and ventilation has been provided with insect screens on all openings. Approach is from an inclined walkway with railings, ensuring easy access for even the elderly.

“Treehouse” is a stone’s throw from the main house and is connected by intercom. Back-up generator power has also been provided. 

Tree Villa

Standing elegantly on stilts, encompassing two trees at a height of 35 feet over the Coffee plantation, the Tree Villa offers you your own personal and private sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of life.

The 1080 sq.feet Tree Villa is spacious, child friendly and completely insect-proofed. Designed to accommodate up to four people, it has 8 feet verandahs on two sides and two bathrooms – one, with a panoramic view of the estate. Other features include a TV, DVD, Satellite receiver, mini fridge, electronic safe and Tea/Coffee maker. 

A private Helipad in the premises is an added attraction as well which is used by many dignitaries and celebrities to visit this location.

Sight Seeing

Edakkal Caves:

The Eddakal Caves, dating back to the Neolithic period – 3000 BC - are only a 10 minutes drive away – the half hour walk uphill to the caves is a great trek, and the ancient rock etchings make the walk worthwhile.  

Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary:

A half hour drive will take you to Muthanga Game Sanctuary where you could spot Elephant, Leopard, Bison, Bear, Sambhar, Wild Dog, Deer, Peacock and even the elusive Tiger.  

Pookote Lake:

A picturesque water body in the hills – about an hour’s drive from here. Boating facilities are available. 

Jain Temple :

A 9th century Jain Temple in Sultans Battery, presently under the Archeological Survey of India, is a heritage site. It is built in the Vijayanagara architectural style, and was used by Tippu Sultan as his Battery, and hence the town derived its name. (earlier called Ganapathivattam) 

Banasura Sagar Dam: 

The Banasura Sagar Dam is located 21 km from Kalpetta, in Wayanad District of Kerala in the Western Ghats. It is the largest earthen dam in India and the second largest in Asia and an ideal starting point for hikes into the surrounding scenic mountains. It is an important tourist attraction.  

In the dam's reservoir there is a set of islands that were formed when the reservoir submerged the surrounding areas. The islands with the Banasura hills in the background provide a spectacular view.  

Meenmutty Falls:

Meenmutty Falls is located 29 km from Kalpetta in Wayanad District in the state of Kerala, India. It is a three-tiered waterfall with a height of 300 metres. Meenmutty Falls, the largest and most spectacular waterfall in the Wayanad District, is a 2 km hike though the jungle from the main Ooty Road. It is Kerala's second largest waterfall and the one most unspoiled in its natural setting. Each of its three tiers requires a separate hike through a moist, deciduous forest.  

Chembra Peak:

Chembra Peak is the highest peak in Wayanad, at 2100m above sea level. Chembra is located near the town of Meppady and is 14 km west of Kalpetta. It is part of the Wayanad hill ranges in Western Ghats, adjoining the Nilgiri Hills in Tamilnadu and Velarimala in Kozhikode district in Kerala. Chembra peak is accessible by foot from Meppady. Permission from the forest office in Meppady is required for trekking up to the Chembra peak. 

Soochipara Falls:

Soochipara Falls is a three-tiered waterfall located 20 km from Kalpetta in Wayanad district in Kerala, India. Its height is 200 metres (656 feet). 

Sulthan’s Battery:

Formerly known as “Ganapathivattom”, Sultan Battery, a former stronghold of Tippu Sultan, is a short drive from Tranquil. Stroll through the town and enjoy the market. Even take a ride in one of many Jeeps that line the market place.
