Surya Samudra Beach Garden is a stunning resort spread over 25 acres of landscaped gardens, surrounded by coconut groves and overlooking the Arabian Sea. Accommodation consists of a series of ancient cottages that have been brought from far-flung villages across Kerala and South Tamil Nadu to recreate a sense of heritage and tradition.

Reminders of history are all around. Beneath the blue-green waters of the beautiful infinity pool lie secrets of the region’s past – built out of an old quarry, the base of the pool is covered in sculptures carved out of the rock walls.

 Surya Samudra keeps Kerala’s ayurvedic medicine alive in an uninterrupted tradition with the Niraamaya Ayurveda Spa. After a consultation with the doctor, guests can choose from a variety of treatments, including expert massages using traditional oils prepared from natural ingredients. Ayurveda is particularly effective on all types of pains in the joints and the muscles, rheumatism and arthritis.

Facilities

Surya Samudra has an ayurvedic massage centre and a yoga centre whose treatments customers swear by.

Surya Samudra keeps Kerala's ayurvedic medicine alive in an uninterrupted tradition on a luxurious scale. After a consultation with the doctor, one can choose from a variety of soothing treatments. An expert massage using traditional medicinal oils prepared from natural ingredients by the masseur can be enjoyed. Excellent results with all types of pains in the joints and the muscles, and with prophylactics and relief from rheumatism and arthrosis have been seen.

Yoga and Meditation

Mental and physical exercises meant to isolate the ego from the body and mind - designed to hone your concentration, improve health and help attain peace of mind through eight stages of training:

Self purification (niyama)
Bodily postures such as the lotus position (asana)
Control of breathing (pranayama)
Control of the senses (pratyahara)
Fixing of the mind on a chosen object (dharana)

In Surya Samudra, yoga is offered for beginners and advanced persons, both for individuals and for small groups.

Accommodation

The 21 wooden cottages are clean and spacious with commanding ocean views. The lines are simple and elegant with a clever layout and raised ceilings, which give the impression of space. The beds are simply made from cane, with mosquito nets, and most rooms have some pieces of antique furniture, rugs and artefacts. Little luxuries include cotton bathrobes and complimentary slippers.

Push open the heavy carved wooden door and step out onto your own private terrace - perfect for enjoying the magnificent sunsets. Each has its own long planter chair for those moments when you’d rather ruminate than mingle with your fellow guests. Whole tharawads (traditional Kerala houses) have been purchased and reassembled here as cottages.

They have been converted into elevated structures, keeping in mind the need for free flow of space to facilitate unhindered movement and natural ventilation. Windows serve as doors while writing desks face the sea. Bathroom-cum-toilets or 'bath gardens' are open air, protected by the slopes on all sides and each house has an open-air cafeteria.

 With the exception of the 4 Rock Garden Rooms (which also have Jaipuri quilts), rooms do not have air conditioning. For natural cooling book one of the ocean front room which catch the sea breeze.
